This is a very attractive small shrub that seems to be growing well as an understory in the regenerated woodland near Bapaume Rd. It is a valuable addition to our site because it is generally hard to regenerate bushland with a stable mid-story layer. This is because planted trees that grow quickly tend to form a canopy that shades out both weeds (which is good) and native shrubs (which is not so good) that would normally be found in the middle. But this shrub has gained a foothold and has begun to self-sow. In natural environments Psychotria daphnoides (also called Smooth Psychotria, Turkey Bush or Native Daphnia) grows to 3 metres in rainforest and moist woodlands. This matches the flat area above the creek where this specimen has established itself.
