Brush-turkey Mound

Male brush turkey building his nest

Our site has hosted a large brush-turkey nest for a long time, much longer than the life of any individual turkey. At about this time of year (late summer) it is a bit unusual for a male brush-turkey (Alectura lathami) to resume building this nest, for they normally do this in early summer (September to December). Nevertheless, he has been carefully and industriously scraping leaf litter from a radius of up to 20m away. This display of engineering is meant to attract females to mate and subsequently lay their large eggs to incubate in the mound.
