Giant Forest Red Gum

Trunk and canopy of a large eucalyptus tree

This giant Forest Red Gum (Eucalyptus tereticornis) is the largest tree on the site and close to the maximum size for this species. Before land clearing that occurred during European settlement, it would have been common in this area. This specimen may have survived the early clearing (possibly as a shade tree for livestock), and if so, would be very old. Over this time it would have provided substantial shelter and food to the surrounding environment. It is an important food tree for koalas, a nesting site for possums and an important source of pollen and nectar for native bees.
