Native Mulberry

Glossy leaves of a native mulberry

This small tree is growing well near the rubble of the old farmhouse. It is a good plant to grow here because of its pioneer status. It should prepare the way for mature forest in the years to come. Native mulberry (Pipturus argenteus) is native to coastal Queensland and northern New South Wales. Prior to European settlement, aborigines used the bark to make fishing nets. It is also edible, but the white mulberry-like fruit is quite small in comparison to traditional mulberries.
