Swamp Wallaby

ALT TEXT

In August our wildlife camera caught this extraordinary sequence of images which have been combined into a movie. It appears to be a Swamp Wallaby (Wallabia bicolor) according to Prof. Darryl Jones, but might be the Red-necked species (also found in surrounding districts). It seems to be browsing on shrubs that we have planted as part of our Wren Habitat Regeneration project, and this feeding behaviour is recorded as characteristic of swamp wallabies.

The real mystery (that this discovery shares with our resident koala population) is how a wallaby could gain access to the Ekibin Creek site? With a freeway and busy roads surrounding the area, it is difficult to see how any large marsupial could navigate here. The nearest substantial woodland, Toohey Forest, does connect through Ekibin Creek (west branch) and Perrone Creek, but access would still involve passing through houses, over roads and/or through large drains. Nevertheless it is heartening to see the return of such wildlife, despite the obstacles.
